Audition FAQs
Is VFLA the right chorus for you? Yes, if you are a woman who:
- loves singing a variety of repertoire (world music, classical, pop and more)
- has some sight-reading ability
- can commit to our rehearsal/ performance schedule for a minimum of one year
- can carry out VFLA's mission statement
What can you tell me about the audition process?
The audition consists of two parts: the musical audition and the interview. The entire process should take approximately 45 minutes.
During the musical audition, the Artistic Director will ask you to:
- sing scales and warm-ups (to determine tone quality and range)
-
repeat simple melodic patterns (to ascertain tonal memory/pitch recognition)
-
sight-read an excerpt (to determine your level of reading skill)
- perform a short a cappella piece of your choice--any style (to showcase your musicality)
During the interview, you will meet with a small group of singers and board members who may ask you questions such as:
- Why would you like to join Vox Femina Los Angeles?
- What are your expectations of the organization?
- What do you feel you can contribute toward the success of VFLA, and how have you demonstrated this ability in the past?
In addition, you will be given a schedule for the year, and the committee will review responsibilities of membership with you. This will be an opportune time for you to ask any questions you may have regarding VFLA.
What responsibilities will I have as a member of VFLA?
First and foremost, at the core of VFLA's mission we strive for a high quality of musical performance. Therefore, the ability to learn your music in a timely manner is of the utmost importance.
VFLA's season usually runs from September through June and consists of three (3) concert preparation periods.
Performances
- Major concerts are generally held in November, March and June, with Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon performances of each concert.
- Community performances are scheduled from time to time to fulfill our mission statement.
- A detailed schedule of all confirmed dates for the upcoming season will be provided at the time of auditions. Any additional performance requests will be brought to the membership to determine feasibility.
Rehearsals
- Singers are expected to attend weekly rehearsals, which are held on Tuesdays from 7:30-9:45 p.m. at Immanuel Presbyterian Church in the mid-Wilshire district.
- An additional dress rehearsal is held during the week prior to each major concert. Attendance is mandatory.
- If needed, extra rehearsals will be scheduled at the Artistic Director's discretion. At most, one retreat/rehearsal may be scheduled per concert preparation period.
Financial Obligations
- All singing members pay annual membership dues of $150. Membership dues are payable in full by the fourth rehearsal at the beginning of the fall season unless special arrangements have been made.
- Each member is required to pay a deposit for her music and performance folder. This deposit is refundable if the music and performance folder are returned in good condition.
- Other costs that members may incur are associated with, but not limited to, touring, retreats, social events and the purchase of promotional items. However, these activities are often optional. Scholarships may be available for touring.
Concert Attire
- Concert attire is the individual responsibility of chorus members.
- For most performances, concert attire is your choice of a very dressy, all black, long-sleeved outfit.
- Less formal attire may be allowable for certain extra performances.
